Healthy Chicken and Dal

Delicious dal infused with flavourful chicken and spices


2 cups water

1 cup split chickpeas

1 star anise

1 bay leaf

¼ tsp salt

¼ tsp turmeric

2 tsp cooking oil

2 cinnamon sticks

2 cardamoms

3 cloves

3 tbsp onion

1 ¼ tsp garlic paste

1 ¼ tsp ginger paste

¼ tsp turmeric

¼ tsp red chili

½ tsp coriander

1 tomato

250 gm chicken breast

½ tsp garam masala

1 ½ cups hot water

3 green chilies

½ tsp roasted cumin

2 tbsp fried onions


1. Pour water in a large pan and add soaked split chickpeas

2. Add star anise, bay leaf, salt to taste, and turmeric

3. Cover with lid and cook until soft on low heat

4. Uncover and remove the bay leaf and star anise

5. Remove the chickpeas from heat and set aside

6. Wipe down pan and add cooking oil

7. Stir in small cinnamon sticks, cardamoms, cloves, and thinly sliced onions

8. Once the onion turns translucent, stir in garlic and ginger paste

9. Pour in a splash of water as needed

10. Mix in turmeric, red chili, and coriander

11. Add a medium size chopped tomato

12. Salt to taste

13. Splash of water

14. Cover with lid and cook for 3 minutes on low heat

15. Uncover and mix in chicken breast pieces

16. Add garam masala and the cooked chickpeas

17. Pour in hot water

18. Add green chilies

19. Cover with lid and cook for another 12 minutes on low to medium heat

20. Uncover and finish off with roasted cumin and fried onion

21. Ready to enjoy!
